A new business park on the outskirts of Harrogate comprising multiple industrial buildings and units. Phase One, a new headquarters for ventilation company EnviroVent brought together their manufacturing facility, warehousing, offices, and training suite into one purpose-built 61,000 sq ft steel framed building with a 48m span portal frame. Before construction began, a cut and fill exercise was required to level the site, with materials being re-used on-site. Our remit included carrying out the Section 278 and Section 38 works, improving and constructing access roads to the park, plus car park areas, and installing an electrical substation and water supply. The contract also included full fit-out of the building. The second phase consisted of eleven industrial units with curved eaves design. The three buildings comprised a 10,118 sq ft warehouse for cladding company Bioclad, complete with first-floor offices and meeting rooms, and a further two buildings split into ten smaller units for a variety of businesses including a food production facility, car mechanics, and a gym.

Situated in the designated conservation area of The Craven Lime Works and quarry, and on the site of the historic scheduled monument and tourist attraction Hoffmann Kiln, this development formed 26,000 sq.ft of light industrial units and office space. The Langcliffe Quarry Enterprise Centre project included both restoration and refurbishment of traditional stone-built buildings and the construction of eight units in three new buildings with stone and timber cladding and slate roof to fit in with the Yorkshire Dales National Parks planning regulations. There were a number of challenges to construction and logistics, including the proximity of a railway line, working around limited access to the site under a low railway bridge and temporary diversions due to a public right of way running through the site. Civils included a new attenuation system to manage surface water, car parking, a new electricity supply and substation, water connections and BARN.

Poor ground conditions at the site of this industrial boiler manufacturers proved a challenge for our team. However, we were able to provide a solution and build a retaining wall that extended the upper yard by a width of 15m allowing additional access around the side of an existing building.

To make the best use of available space in one of Harrogate’s most prestigious business parks, Sutcliffe was tasked with building a retaining wall system to create more – and safe – parking spaces. Cardale Park, owned by the Commercial Estates Group, is home to many of Harrogate’s leading companies, including national and international groups. This was a design and build project that began with excavating for foundations, installing a pre-cast retaining wall system,  extending existing surface water drainage and upgrading the existing lighting. The extension created 65 much-needed new parking spaces.

Damaged by floods in 2015, the old Horton Bridge had to be replaced. As this is the only access route to a small group of residences, we built a temporary footbridge to allow pedestrians access for the duration of the project. The project involved ground investigation and a design solution for a 32t weight-limit bridge. Having demolished and removed the old bridge, we made new foundations and installed a new steel bridge with a reinforced concrete deck. Finally, we reinstated all kerbing and access roads including lamp posts.

This was our first project for Belzona International, a global leader in the chemical protection and composite materials repair industry. It involved developing a bunded containment area with an underground fire water attenuation tank at this multi-national client’s well-developed UK HQ site in Claro Road, Harrogate. The project was completed in 2016 and in 2017 we were contracted again to build its state-of-the-art £4.3 million 3,665 sqm warehouse, distribution and training facility, also in Harrogate.

Cawingredients is a soft drinks manufacturer with three plants on its Leeming Bar site in North Yorkshire – all built by Sutcon since 2009 when the company was launched. In 2014, we were contracted to build a Water Treatment Plant Base to support the production facilities. The project included extensive site preparation and excavation – a stretch of existing bunding had to be cut and pulled back with a new bund formed along the side of the busy A1. New perimeter retaining walls, foundations and concrete slabs, buffer tanks, drainage and soakaways were the key elements of this civils project.
